OIRAE briefing explores undergraduate core curriculum and students’ time to completion

More than 30,000 undergraduates will be expected to complete the undergraduate core curriculum since Purdue implemented it in the fall of 2013. Most of the course requirements have been or will be completed by the end of a student’s second year.

According to the latest briefing from the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Effectiveness (OIRAE), 83 percent of the eight foundational learning outcomes (FLOs) to be generated by taking the core courses were completed by a student’s fourth term.

A public forum on the report will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 15, in Rawls Hall, Room 2070.

Completing the remaining FLOs will usually take more time, depending on the student’s primary college of attendance. For example, the oral communication FLO takes students in the colleges of Agriculture and Science more time as does qualitative reasoning for students in education and veterinary medicine.

The briefing indicates that the number and frequency of courses offered to complete the FLOs is adequate. At any given time, there is not a single course where all of the students are taking the course to fulfill a FLO. According to the briefing, a maximum of 70 percent of students in a class are taking the course to fulfill a FLO.

Still, OIRAE does recommend that colleges and departments further explore how their students progress through the FLO course requirements, and how the undergraduate core curriculum as a whole affects the time to degree, if at all.
