Purdue retiring BoilerBackpack storage service

BoilerBackpack powered by Syncplicity, a file storage, syncing and sharing service Purdue began offering to faculty, staff and students in 2012, will be retired by July 31.

BoilerBackpack users will need to move stored files that they want to keep to another storage option before then. One option is Microsoft’s OneDrive for Business, which is available to the campus community now at no cost. OneDrive has the advantage of offering faculty, staff and students a terabyte of space each. BoilerBackpack in contrast generally offers 150 gigabytes, one-seventh of OneDrive’s capacity.

For information on transferring files from BoilerBackpack to OneDrive for Business, as well as sharing and syncing files and using OneDrive with iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, see http://www.purdue.edu/goldanswers/696556.

“BoilerBackpack was an innovative, useful service when Purdue rolled it out five years ago,” says Dan Schumacher, ITaP’s interim executive director for infrastructure services. “Technology continually advances, however, and there are now much better options.”

Under Purdue’s data storage policies, it may not be appropriate to store some types of data on off-campus options like OneDrive for Business. For more information visit Secure Purdue’s Data Classification & Handling website.

Purdue was one of the first schools to offer what was, for the time, mass, available-anywhere network storage to its faculty, staff and students for their digital belongings. ITaP later added the syncing and sharing features via Syncplicity after users requested it. OneDrive for Business has built in syncing and sharing functionality
